Innovations – Quartzell® Technology

A new technology for the weighing industry

Speed, Accuracy and High Resolution

In a continuing search for advanced solutions to business needs, Weigh-Tronix introduced quartz digital technology to the weighing industry. Developed through eight years of research and at a cost of $9 million the Quartzell® transducer is an easy to manufacture, direct digital load cell with high accuracy, speed and stability. Quartzell® allows the scale to weigh faster to improve throughput especially in weight ranges that are critical for small packets and flats, so all mail and parcels can be weighed on a single scale.

Unlike a strain gauge load cell that produces an analog signal, the Quartzell® transducer uses two, double-ended tuning-fork quartz crystal sensors and a uniquely designed load cell structure to produce high-resolution weight measurements – at a level that far exceeds current industry standards.

Present Quartzell Applications

Counting Scales – Our Industrial Division of Weigh-Tronix located in Fairmont, Minnesota introduced the first commercial applications using the Quartzell transducer in 1993. The higher resolution of Weigh-Tronix counting scales allows inventory management to become simpler and more accurate.

Bench Scales – The NCI scales can be used to weigh letters and parcels all on one scale with a greater accuracy than before. Its compact low profile base fits easily into any operation and its multi-weight range capability allows you to weigh all your letters, small parcels, and larger packages with greater accuracy. The Quartzell® base can be used as a high-resolution remote base for a counting scale or linked to an indicator for new levels of weighing sensitivity.

Postal Scales – Quartzell® technology answers the need for higher accuracy and revenue protection in domestic and international postal applications. The NCI Model 7620 can be used to weigh letters and parcels all on one scale with a greater accuracy than before. Its compact low profile base fits easily into any operation and its multi weight range capability allows you to weigh all your letters, small parcels, and larger packages with greater accuracy.

Measurements in Ascending or Descending Weights – Weighing mixed items of varying size and weight.

Batch Weighing – Useful in food preparation loss in weight applications

Check Weighing – High speed weight validation is useful in the food industry applications, where product is to ensure proper product weight.

Quartzell® transducers provide the weighing industry with:

Speed – The digital signal allows a scale to weigh faster and with greater resolution. Improving throughput and processing saves both time and money.

Direct Digital Output – Because each cell uses two quartz crystals, the Quartzell® transducer eliminates external influences such as temperature and pressure. When weight is applied, the signal is seen as the true weight, one not subject to environmental interferences. This allows easier interfacing of multi-sensor systems.

Accurate Weight Measurement – Because errors are minimized, the Quartzel®l load cell provides consistent, repeatable output. This ability increases speed, saved time, provides greater accuracy, and minimizes user error. Quartzell® scales don’t require warm-up.

Durability in a Simple Design – The rugged, long-lasting Quartzell® load cell is easily manufactured using standard production techniques and equipment. Its non-critical assembly assures highly repeatable results from device to device.

Adjustable Gravity Constant Value – Gravity varies within a country and around the globe. Through the scale keyboard, the factory pre-set gravity constant value can be decreased or increased to the correct value for the scale’s installation. As a result, Quartzell® scales maintain consistent calibration, weighing with absolute accuracy.
